Looking Ahead To Saturday’s Spring Game

Saturday’s Annual Black & Gold Game could easily be designated as a “glorified” scrimmage versus an actual game. Well, technically, that is what it will be as the Army Black Knights close out their spring football session, in conjunction with hosting several prospects for Junior Day.

It will come down to offense versus defense, as the team has been hit with several injuries across the board, but especially on the offensive line, where several key members are banged up.

To date, there hasn’t been any official word on what the format will look like come Saturday. However, we have been told that head coach Jeff Monken will gauge the progress of the day’s activities, but it will be game conditions.

NOTABLES: GoBlackKnights.com senior writer Gordon Larson pointed out to me two interesting observations.

First, Air Force also had a limited spring game and Falcons’ head coach Troy Calhoun featured the younger players, holding out the regulars. According to Larson, there seems to be a general trend away from holding a full scale scrimmage at the end of spring practice for a lot of teams.

Could Monken be following a similar trend? We shall see on Saturday!

Secondly, he noted that the Wake Forest spring game had an interesting twist. Rather than assigning players to teams, they made the two quarterbacks captains and let them choose their own teams for the game.

Interesting to say the least!

Saturday's (4/30) annual Black-Gold Spring Game is scheduled for a 1 p.m. kick-off at Michie Stadium. As has become his tradition, Head coach Jeff Monken has selected 10 honorary captains (former players).
